War is terrible, rebellions are worse, and being on the losing side is a death sentence. Meet Nick, the son of the rebel leader who lost the war. Follow him and his friends as they enter an Empire filled with class systems and Shadow Magic, all while dealing with the consequences of living. Nick may not be the warrior that his father was, but he is an opportunist. And if he has to make it into this new world, he will. He only hopes his parents aren’t rolling in their graves.
“You know what they say, ‘If you can’t beat them…’”
“Join them?” His friend pales.

Characters

Nickolaus Archer -Westmore

Better known as Nick, is pushed around by everyone around him, most notedly his cousin Braawen – but he doesn’t stay down.
He is an opportunist and tries to make the best out of the worst situations. He is blessed or cursed, depending on who you ask, with Shadow Magic, and is sent by order of his conqueror, the Night Emperor, to the Equinox House. A school for budding Shadow Wielders with the sole purpose of serving the Empire loyally – or die trying. His goal to make it into this new world is to become his enemy’s new leader. The first step into becoming their new leader is to become a Black, the highest rank in Shadow Magic.

Lorcan Ursa

The right-hand man to who he believes is the future leader of Avalia, Braawen, is a proud and unbreakable warrior of the Eastern plains. However, the Equinox House is whole new world, and his kind don’t belong here. Bitter and angry at the world, he struggles to control himself in a place where everyone sees him as a savage.

When he realizes that he could be the only one left of his tribe, it’s up to him to keep his culture alive in a foreign land. And that’s something worth fighting for.

Takara Edo

This is all her brother’s fault. She’s a farmer’s daughter and would still be that if her brother hadn’t joined the rebel army against her father’s wishes. Now she has to pay the price by being thrown into a foreign land away from her family. She only has one thing on her mind, survive by any means necessary. If she can accomplish that, she’ll get the chance to return home, find her family, kill her brother and dance on his grave.

Braawen Archer

Cousin of Nick and the ‘heir’ to Markus Archer, Braawen had to be born a leader. He’s fought in battles since age ten and draws people to him through his battlefield skills and charisma.
The Equinox House is just another battlefield for him to conquer, and conquering is what he’s good at. To get stronger, he is told that one must cut out his past, and his cousin Nicky is just that. Which means Nick has to go. He can’t afford to lose now, or what would be the point of fighting at all.

Kaius Oringo

Nick’s best and only friend is a tall-young boy who has lived a life of poverty and wishes to become more. Too bad a rebellion and time in prison got in the way of that, and now he feels nothing but bitterness. The Equinox House may just be his second opportunity, but he must remain smart about it. It’s not just his safety that matters; Kaius has someone he can’t afford to lose.
With his brilliant thinking and new resources, he creates inventions and tools to make it on his terms.

Bhaltair Rolls

Bhaltair is a baker’s son, and that’s all he was ever supposed to be, but everything changes when he survives the ‘Night of the Silence’. Now Bhaltair has to take sleeping vials, or his nightmares will rue his nights. Too bad the nightmares don’t feel like they’ve ended even when he’s awake, the Equinox House is not his home, and he doesn’t want to be here.
His goal is simple, he wants to return home and eat bread from Availa. The bread that his father used to make in the castle.

Rohana Snowfield

Rohana needs no one. She learned that lesson after she was betrayed by her half-sister, she has the scares to remind her every day. She’s cold, defensive and doesn’t like it when people look at her face for too long. But she won’t stoop to her sister’s level, she wants justice not revenge, and the empire may just help her get it.

Volodimir

A very dangerous man, with a mission from the Night Emperor himself to take the latest conquests and turn them into the new foundation of the Empire. No one can do the job like he can because where others see dirt and mud, Volodimir sees soil and clay. Soil in which he could plant a seed that would grow, and not wither. Clay that he could mold.
